Ancient legends about Flying Fish
In the "Classic of Mountains and Seas" (Shan Hai Jing), it is recorded that the Zhenghui River originates from there, flowing northward to join the main river. It is inhabited by many flying fish, which resemble dolphins with red patterns on their bodies. They are fearless of thunder and can be used for protection against enemies.
The "Classic of Mountains and Seas" contains numerous accounts of flying fish, describing them as creatures with the bodies of fish and the wings of birds, capable of soaring between the sky and the sea. According to legend, their wings are translucent and resemble the wings of cicadas. Their appearance is similar to that of a piglet, but with red patterns. It is said that wearing or possessing a flying fish can provide protection against warfare.
As a symbol of auspiciousness, the image of the flying fish frequently appears in ancient clothing and artifacts. For example, during the Ming Dynasty, the exclusive attire of the Imperial Bodyguards was called the "Feiyu Fu" (Flying Fish Robe).
